TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has won the National Unmanned Speedboat Contest (KKCTBN) 2016. The event was held at the Shipbuilding Institute of Polytechnic Surabaya (PPNS) building. “The Roboboat team and other student communities had been prepared since early this year,” said UGM official Ahmad Agus Setiawan on Friday, December 2, 2009.

UGM students have won no less than 600 medals until the end of 2016. “It shows that UGM students are very competitive and ready to compete globally, particularly in Roboboat,” Ahmad Agus noted.

Agus explained that UGM adopts the paradigm of sustainable development, which involves students in the education process. Students are not only required to win competitions but also to prepare the next generation. “To prepare future winners in the next education innovation [competitions].”

The first step in the implementation of the concept is to establish communities to compete in events. UGM is currently home to 20 communities, including Robobat community. “Through the communities, development can be carried out better and clear targets can be set,” Agus Ahmad added.

The National Unmanned Speedboat Contest was held on November 28 to December 1, 2016. UGM won first prize in electric remote control category and third spot in an autonomous category. The contest was held by the Technology and High Education Ministry to foster students’ creativity in designing boats, develop propulsion system and navigation automation to support disaster mitigation maneuver.
