TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahmad Redi, an expert on national resources law from the Tarumanegara University, said that the appointment of Energy and Mineral Resources Deputy Minister Arcandra Tahar as the vice president of the commissioner of state oil and gas firm Pertamina was the right decision.
“I think it’s a professional decision to recruit people who are competent in their fields,” Redi said in a press release received by Tempo on Monday, November 28, 2016.
Arcandra was appointed as Pertamina’s vice president of the commissioner on Monday, November 14, 2016, to replace Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, who was demoted as the member of the commissioner board.
According to Redi, many high-ranking officials at the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry could not establish strong communications with the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.
“The recruitment of Arcandra is expected to ensure good communications with the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.
Redi added that Arcandra is familiar with the oil and gas management sector. His presence at Pertamina is believed to bring improvement to the state oil and gas firm. However, Redi reminded that Arcandra must work hard to build Pertamina by improving corporate actions and initiated business expansions abroad.
In addition, Redi said that Arcandra must strive to search for new oil fields in the country to improve productivity. Pertamina also needs to be competitive among foreign oil companies. Finally, Pertamina must be less dependent on the government in terms of capital.
