TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government will relocate street vendors operating in the Old City district as part of their efforts in revamping the historical part of the capital.
Acting Jakarta governor Sumarsono said there are currently 400 traders conducting their business and opening temporarily stalls on the streets and pedestrian walks of the Old City area.
"In the disciplinary efforts, there are 256 registered vendors who are willing to be relocated. So, it's about relocating the vendors at Cengkeh Street, so they will no longer sell goods on the streets," he said at the Jakarta City Hall, Monday, November 28.
Sumarsono said the Old City—or Kota Tua—is very chaotic and in need of rearrangement.
"Then, we will build the Old City by revitalizing the great river corridor as part of the city landscape," he said.
Sumarsono said he will incorporate Betawian values in revamping the Old City. The Jakarta Provincial Government has a local rule or a governor's regulation on preserving Betawi culture.
