TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sukamdi, Senior researcher of the Center for Population and Policy Studies (PSKK) at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) said that Indonesia is facing a serious danger with the rising number of the elderly.
"The same problem also happens in other countries such as Japan. But such an alarming issue has not received proper attention," Sukamdi claimed in UGM campus on Saturday (22/10). "I think Indonesia has not properly responded to the issue."
Sukamdi mentioned that PSSK UGM data depicts 100 percent increase of the number of elders by 2035. In 2010, the percentage of the number of the elders was 4,9 percent or 11.878.236 and the figure is projected to rise to 10,8 percent or 32.112.361 by 2035.
Sukamdi explained that elders will experience three disparities, which are geographical, cultural, and economic disparities.
Such disparities will cause problems, he said.
Sukamdi further said that cases of neglect of the elderly in Indonesia reflect the need of attention to the growing ageing population.
