TEMPO.CO, JNusa Dua - Indonesia’s fifth president Megawati Soekarnoputri has asked the United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to establish the Non-Aligned Movement as a Memory of the World. According to her, Indonesia as one of the nations of initiator would like to submit it as a commemoration of world peace.

“By making it a memory of the world, would show that the best way to settle a conflict between nations is through peace and cultural diplomacy,” said Megawati at the World Culture Forum (WCF) II on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

The non-aligned movement is a follow-up from the Asian-African Conference that was held in Bandung in 1955. The first high-scale Non-Aligned Movement conference was held in Beograd, Yugoslavia in 1961. The Asian-African Conference itself has been assigned as a memory of the world by the UNESCO.

According to Megawati, by assigning the Non-Aligned Movement as one of the memories of the world, would inform and remind people of the world's history. The movement was a cultural diplomacy step that was done by a number of nations to gather solidarity in order to create world peace. “This is a history of the world civilization,” She said.
