TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and Finland will follow-up the MOU on conducting research towards antibiotic resistance that has become a threat in many regions across the world. “Antibiotic resistance is marked with germs that are resistant to medications. Which causes antibiotics to have no effect on a living organism,” Says the Chief Deputy of BPPT in the Agro-Industry Technology and Biotechnology Sector, Eniya Listiani Dewi, on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.

Eniya says that current antibiotics are not only used for human medication, but is also used for livestock and fishery. According to her, the dose in antibiotic treatment tends to be used too excessively. Which actually causes the germs to adapt and be immune to the effects of antibiotic.

The worst is, she said, that antibiotics has contaminated the environment, especially the rivers.

Rivers in Indonesia is often used as a landfill for substances containing antibiotic. The dumping activity is allegedly practiced by healthcare facilities, stock-breeding, and fishery that utilizes antibiotic.

Early researches will be conducted at two rivers that are allegedly contaminated with an antibiotic substance, those rivers are Cisadane and Kalicode. The two rivers, according to Eniya, will be thoroughly inspected for its substance contents.
