TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that the death toll in Garut flash floods had reached 23, while 18 were still missing.

The BNPB head Willem Rampangilei said the office’s emergency response continues to be done, including to meet basic needs for food, shelter and clean water.

“As of last night, death toll had reached 23 and 18 others are still missing,” Willem said Thursday, as quoted by Bisnis.com.

He added that the search for those missing was carried out by a joint team comprising the BNPB, the National Search-and-Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Army, police, the National Red Cross (PMI), the disaster response team (Tagana), relevant agencies, volunteers and locals. Garut Regent Rudi Gunawan had set up a flat with a capacity of 100 people to accomodate displaced flood victims.

Garut Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that the disaster had left 433 homeless. They had been housed at the local military base.

The BNPB had sent Rp2 billion in disaster relief to Garut BPBD and West Java BPBD, which include instant meals, blankets, mattresses, tents, school uniforms, kids wear, etc.

The BNPB is currently conducting a fast analysis on damages caused by the disaster. It had also been carrying out a mapping via drones and high-resolution satellite imagery, in cooperation with the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (Lapan), BIG and the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology BPPT.
