Expert Hails Threshold for Commodity Prices Policy by Govt

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Professor Dwi Andreas Santosa from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture praised the government's policy that sets up threshold for commodity prices. But he said that then government will be having a difficult time in intervening the market in case of fluctuation, if there is no supply.
Dwi said that the government needs to supply at least 20 percent of the commodity in the market. The fact is, the Central Logistics Agency onlu has 6 to 9 percent of the national crop.
"Not to mention other commodities. We have very little supply," he said.
Therefore, if the threshold is implemented, even if it is in Jakarta only, it will not have benefit greatly.
Previously, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita has confirmed that the government has setup a reference price for seven staple food commodities, namely rice, corn, soybean, sugar, shallot, chili, and beef. For each commodity, the government as set up 2 prices - buying and selling price.
"The reference price is meant to sustain supply, stability, and prices for farmers and consumers," said Enggar.
