TEMPO.CO, South Tangerang - Heavy rain in South Tangerang city on Saturday (27/8) has caused floods in a number of residential complexes in the city as well as breaching a river embankment.

Annisah (25), a resident at Pondok Maharta residential complex in the city, said that the embankment burst at around 6 pm on Sunday after it was not able to accomodate water in the river.

Jalan Setia Budi, which is adjacent to the embankment was also flooded.

"Last night, water level in the river was already high. Maybe because the river could no longer accomodate the water, the embankment burst. Floodwater of up tp 1.5 meter also inundated the street nearby," she said on Sunday.

According to Annisah, the flood on Satuday evening was the 'worst'.

"It's good that the local government has stepped in to help the affected residents but the rain was so heavy and the river finally overflew," she added.

In the meantime, Head of South Tangerang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Uci Sanusi confirmed that the rain on Saturday evening has caused floods in a number of residential areas in the city.

A team from the BPBD has also been deployed to prepare rubber boats, she added.

Ready-to-eat food and mineral water have also been prepared, Uci said.

"We've coordinated with Tangerang Highway and Water Resources Agency," she said.

Meanwhile, Ade Suprijal, an official from Tangerang Highway and Water Resources Agency, said the agency has taken measures to fix the embankment.

"Because of the high level of water in the river, the embankment finally burst, " he said, adding that the agency has deployed a team to fix the embankment.
