TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives Speaker Ade Komarudin stated that Indonesia does not acknowledge the International People's Tribunal 1965 (IPT 1965).

"Whatever IPT 1965 decision is, Indonesia has no obligation to comply," Ade said on Friday, July 22, 2016.

Panel of judges of the IPT 1965 at the Hague recently declared Indonesia guilty and should be responsible for crime against humanity against members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).

The panel, led by Judge Zakeria Yacoob, recommends the Indonesian government to extend an apology and provides compensation to the 1965 massacre victims and their families, and brings the people responsible behind the massacre to justice.

Ade asserted that Indonesia has suffered enough, and the country should just learn from past incidents. "This nation has experienced one too many political turmoil," Ade said.

Ade stated that it would be better for Indonesia to strengthen its nationalism in dealing with negative effects caused by global economic downturn.

Similarly, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan also refused to acknowledge the IPT 1965’s decision. Luhut asserted that the IPT is not an official institution.

Luhut also allow the IPT to bring its decision to the United Nations. In response to the IPT’s plan, Luhut threatened to bring the Westerling Massacre case that occurred in 1945 until 1949 in South Sulawesi to the United Nations.

"We will bring the Westerling case to the United Nations," Luhut said.
