TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-The police are expecting to see a high number of people leaving urban areas to their hometowns this Eid. National chief of police Gen. Badrodin Haiti predicts some 17.6 million homecomers will be on the road this year.

The police force, he said, is ready to secure the safety and security of the homecomers, while ensuring that everything goes in order and traffic is smooth.

"Homecoming is part of the Eid tradition in Indonesian culture," he said in Jakarta Thursday, June 30, 2016.

Badrodin projects some 2.4 million cars will be on the homecoming routes this year. Meanwhile, motorbikes are expected to reach 5.6 million in numbers.

Last year, he said, there were 3,048 cases of homecoming-related accidents, in which 646 people died and 1,057 heavily injured.

To minimize the number of accidents this year, Badrodin has asked officers to exercise preemptive measures and collaborate with other institutions.

The Indonesian police will hold the Ramadan Operation (Operasi Ramadaniya) for 16 days starting today, June 30 until July 15. There will be 158.402 personnel deployed, consisting of officers from the Police HQ, the regional and resort police squads, and other state agencies.
