TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nine women from Mount Kendeng, Central Java, staged protest in from of the State Palace earlier this afternoon to show their objection towards the construction of cement factory in their region.
"The nine women cemented their feet in front of the State Palace," said Gunretno, Coordinator for the Mount Kendeng People Network on Tuesday, April 12, 2016.
The protest was not the first to take place. Gunretno said that last year, housewives from Mount Kendeng had also staged protest by hitting lesung (wooden tool used to separate rice from its husks) in front of the State Palace.
Gunrento explained that the women decided to cement their feet as a symbol how the cement factory will constrain the life and future of Mount Kendeng residents because it will damaged the local environment.
