TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government is set to draft a biodiversity law to protect wildlife in Indonesia. Data from the Indonesian Science Institute (LIPI) in 2014 reveals that Indonesia boats more than 47,000 species of plants and animals.
“However, only 236 of them are protected,” Indra Exploitasia Semiawan, head of Genetic Resources Sub-directorate at the Environment and Forestry Ministry, said during a discussion of biodiversity conservation draft bill exports held in Jakarta on Tuesday, January 12, 2016.
Indra revealed that the government was in a process of including 1,492 bird species in the protected animals list. Indra explained that his institution needed to work with the customs office to protect animals.
“Law enforcement institutions for non-protected animals are not yet available,” he added.
Indra added that there were no bills that govern non-protected animals exploitation, both in the nature and in conservation areas.
Therefore, the government hopes that the draft bill will provide legal basis to protect biodiversity species, whether they are categorized as protected, endangered or controlled.
