Govt Earmarks Rp66 Trillion to Build 49 Dams

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mudjiaji, director general of water resources at the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry, said that the government planned to build 49 dams within 5 years.
“The allocated budget is around Rp66 trillion (US$5 billion),” Mudjiaji said in Banyuangi, East Java, on Tuesday, December 1, 2015.
Mudjiadi added that the constructions would be commenced this year and were expected to complete by 2019. The government had signed contracts for 13 dams this year.
According to Mudjiaji, the dams will be prioritized for irrigation, flooding prevention and raw water provision, as well as micro-hydro power plants.
Mudjiadi revealed that 6 out of 16 dams initiated by the previous government had been completed this year. One of them was Bajulmati Dam located in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java.
The dam with a capacity of 10 million cubic meters was projected to provide irrigation for 1,800 hectares of agriculture lands in Banyuwangi and Situbondo in 2016.
