TEMPO.CO, Kudus - Women Solidarity Foundation for Humanity and Human Right (SPEK-HAM) reveals a connection between bad sanitary system with increasing domestic violence and sexual harassment in Indonesia.

“This is because women don’t have access to proper and secure toilet,” said SPEK-HAM Director Endang Listiani--more familiarly known as Eliest--in Workshop for Award Winning Beneficiary and User Community (KPP) IPAL Komunal at Griptha Hotel, Kudus, Central Java on Wednesday, July 29.

“Women who uses public toilets daily tend to fall victim to sexual harassment. This is because they are easier to be seen and perpetrators are harder to be identified since the place is accessed by many people,” said Eliest.

Other example of bad sanitary system affecting women’s well being is the limited access to clean water. Clean water is important especially for pregnant and delivering women.

“We urge women to actively involved with activities relating to environment so that they will aware of healthy lifedata-style,” Eliest added.
