TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has yet decided the candidates of Indonesian Military Commander to succeed retiring Gen. Moeldoko, State Secretary Pratikno said at his office on Thursday, May 28, 2015.

Vice President Jusuf “JK” Kalla neither confirmed about the name nor the force of the candidates.

“Let the president deal with it later,” JK said at his office.

Gen. Moeldoko will be officially relieved from his duty as the Indonesian Military Commander on August 1, 2015. Under article 13 paragraph 4 of Law No. 34/2004 on Indonesian Military (TNI), the military commander position shall be alternately filled by an active officer from each force who currently or has hold a position as the chief of staff of the force.

Al Araf, the program director of human rights NGO Imparsial, asked Jokowi to consider the rotation system in appointing the military commander. Under the regulation, Al Araf said that Air Force chief of staff Marshal Agus Supriatna has the right to succeed Gen. Moeldoko from the Army.

“[Before Moeldoko] the military commander position was held by Agus Suhartono from the Navy. So the next military commander should be from the Air Force,” he said.

Al Araf also highlighted the importance of the candidates’ track records. According to Al Araf, the candidates must support human rights enforcement, since the Indonesian Military was often associated with human rights violations.

Hafidz Abbas, the chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), viewed that the names to be promoted as the military commander have clean records. In addition to Agus, Army Chief Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo and Navy Chief Admiral Ade Supandi are also on the list of the candidates.
