TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has ordered financing companies and lenders to manage and discipline debt collectors who are working unethically. OJK deputy for non-bank supervision Dumoly F. Pardede said the regulator will summon relevant companies and hold them accountable for the unpleasant behaviors of their collecting agents.

The OJK finds it necessary to regulate debt collectors following reports that some debt collectors are doing their jobs by using ways that are unpleasant to clients.

The issue began when a family member of DPR lawmaker Ahmad Sahroni reported that he was treated badly by debt collectors from a financing company. The OJK has requested clarification from the companies concerned.

"The OJK will protect the public and ensure the industry is working according to the terms," he said.

OJK chief executive for non-bank supervision Firdaus Djaelani had said that the regulator receives many complaints from consumers about insurance firms and lending companies. Complained from financing consumers mostly relate to debt collectors while in the insurance industry consumers often complained about filing for policy claims from insurers whose business licensed have been revoked.
