TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman has called on the public to consume local rice in light of the alarming circulation of plastic rice.

“My message to the public is for them to love local products. If [the rice] comes from farmers there will be no doubt about it. So please love our own rice,” he said at the State Palace on Wednesday, May 20, 2015.

The minister also assured plastic rice circulation only took place in Bekasi and there had been no similar discoveries in other regions.

He then reiterated that purchasing local rice was the simplest step to avoid plastic rice. “The easiest way is to purchase local rice, that’s it. Local rice is [real] for sure. Usually they have their own packages to differentiate one from the others,” he said.

Amran said his ministry was still tracking down the origin of the plastic rice and could not confirm yet as to whether the rice was imported.
