TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Central of Statistics Agency (BOS) reported that the number of unemployed Indonesians has increased. From February 2014 to February 2015, unemployment has increased by 300,000 people.
BPS chief Suryamin said that Indonesia now has 7.45 million people who are unemployed, which is 5.81 percent of the population. This number grew from 7.15 million (5.70 percent) in the same period last year.
"The growth of unemployment is a result of the economic slowdown that Indonesia has experienced since the first quarter of 2011," Suryamin said in a press conference at his office yesterday.
The BPS has announced that the economy only grew 4.71 percent in the first quarter this year, down 0.5 percent from the same period last year.
On a quarterly basis, the growth is down by 0.18 percent.
