TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Ethiopia has continued to aggressively penetrate the global coffee market, with an initial target of becoming the world’s sixth largest coffee exporter, according to Abdullah Bagerish, the chairman of the African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA).

“We’re optimistic that Ethiopian coffee will prevail in the global level, particularly in competing in the U.S. market, said Bagerish on Monday, April 27, 2015.

Ethiopian coffee exports to the global market presently stand at 350 million tons per year—a 10 percent increase compared to in previous years. The figure is close to Indonesia’s at 500 million tons annually.

Indonesia is the sixth largest coffee producer in the world with a 5.6 percent market share. Meanwhile, Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, Canada and Guatemala have continued their dominance in the global coffee market.

The U.S., the European Union (EU) and Japan are today the world’s largest coffee consumers, respectively.
