Foreign Affairs Ministry Tells French to Respect Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked French President Francois Hollande to respect law enforcement in Indonesia.

Spokesperson of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Arrmanatha Christian Nasir, said that the Indonesian government is just enforcing the law that prevails in the country.

“We hope that other countries respect law enforcement in Indonesia,” said Arrmanatha on Saturday. According to Arrmanatha, Indonesia also respects law enforcement in other countries.

Previously, French President Francois Hollande gave a diplomatic threat to Indonesia if Indonesia proceeds with the plan to execute French national Serge Atlaoui. Hollande also said that he would recall his ambassador in Jakarta and would not visit Indonesia for an indefinite period of time.

Arrmanatha said that the execution should not strain diplomatic relations because all legal rights of foreign nationals convicted with death sentences have been given, including consular notification commonly done in international relations.

“Diplomatic ties must always be two way. If it is disrupted, then both parties are at loss,” he said.
