TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on Indonesia to stop the executions of 10 prisoners on death row for drug crimes, including citizens of Australia, Brazil, Ghana and Philippine.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that the United Nations opposes the death penalty under all circumstances. Dujarric in a statement said that the UN secretary General has appealed to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to consider declaring a moratorium on capital punishment in Indonesia.

“The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights states that the death penalty can be imposed for the most serious crimes, such as those involving premeditated murder,” Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson said as quoted by Reuters.

In addition, Mr. Dujarric viewed that violations related to drugs in general are not considered as serious crime.
