TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google launches a new wireless service in the United States called the Project Fi that helps users suppress data usage and keep the phone bill low. In its official statement reported by The Guardian, Google says that its debut on wireless industry will only work on Nexus 6 through Sprint and T-Mobile network.

The service will automatically switch between the two networks and more than 1m open, free Wi-Fi spots, depending on which signal is strongest. Users will be charged US$20 per month for the service plus US$10 per gigabyte of the used data. Customers will get money back for unused data.

Since the service is only available on one device and has limited carrier coverage, according to research director at Gartner, Brian Blau, it will not make Google a major wireless industry player. If successful, however, Google’s service could pressure wireless providers to further lower prices and better adapt to the rise of tablets and wearable devices, Blau added.
