RI to Boast 40-meter Jesus Statue

TEMPO.CO, Makale - The Tana Toraja administration of South Sulawesi has allotted Rp22 billion for the planned construction of a massive statue of Jesus Christ. The bronze statue, which is made in Yogyakarta, will stand tall at 40 meters on top of Buntu Burake Hill, Makale.
"We are now working on the foundation," said the head of spatial planning and residential areas of Tana Toraja government, David Kambu, on Friday, April 17, 2015.
He added that the statue would likely be the world's tallest, beating Brazil's iconic Jesus statue.
"[Therefore,] tourism potential in Tana Toraja will not be bound to that of its culture only. It can grow to become religious and natural tourism," said David. He added the central government also took part in in the statue's construction.
Tana Toraja Regent Theofilus Allorerung told a Friday press conference that the foundation of the statue would be a two-story building. "We hope that this statue can boost tourism in Tana Toraja," he said. "We already have an international-standard airport here."
