East Java Customs Investigate Illegal Cigarette Production

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Officers from the Supervision and Services Office of Madiun Customs and Directorate General of Customs and Excise of East Java are investigating cigarette products that do not have a excise tape. The illegal cigarette products have been distributed for months in Ngawi.
The investigation begins today, April 17, 2015, as a follow up to a confiscation made the day before. Officers confiscated a total of 1,550 packs of illegal cigarettes from five distributors in Ngawi and Walikukun districts.
"The cigarettes were suspected to be originated from Central Java," said Haryono, Head of the Supervision and Services Office of Madiun Customs on Thursday evening, April 16, 2015.
Authorities are yet to gather information about the location of the factory that produces these illegal cigarettes. According to Article 56 of Law No. 39/2007 on Excise, the violators can be subject to five years of imprisonment at maximum and a maximum fine of Rp. 27 million.
