TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The copper export permit for PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) is extended for six months on Wednesday after the US-based miner finally submitted the document that assures its commitment to build a smelter with Freeport Indonesia.
R. Sukhyar, director general of mineral and coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said the documents were handed over by NNT president director Martiono Hadianto, Bisnis Indonesia reported.
Sukhyar said the documents are one of the requirements to obtain an export permit extension, even though Newmont and Freeport have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will expire on March 30, 2015.
The government is ready to give Newmont a copper export quota of 679,000 ton for the next year, once the discussion over the shares portion in the cathode copper smelter construction is completed.
