TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sabam Leo Batubara, a former deputy chairman of the Indonesian Press Council, asserted that Tempo did not violated Law on Banking in relation to the allegation of leaking confidential information on Budi Gunawan's bank accounts. Leo said that Tempo published information gained from its sources.
"Tempo did not leak [the information], but the institution who's aware of the information. The institution must have an authority in banking," Leo said in a press conference at the Press Council building in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 3, 2015.
Tempo, Leo added, highlighted Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan's budget flow without diminishing or adding the information gained from the sources.
Earlier, Mohamad Fauzan Rachman, Chairman of the Indonesian Grassroot Society Movement (GMBI), filed a lawsuit against Tempo Magazine edition January 19-January 25, 2015, entitled "Bukan Sekedar Rekening Gendut" to the National Police Criminal Investigation Directorate for exposing Budi Gunawan's budget flow to a number of individuals.
On Tuesday, March 3, 2015, police interrogated an expert witness represented by the Press Council's member of legal commission Heru Cahyo.
"Based on the Memorandum of Understanding agreed by police and the Press Council, police must reject the investigation and hand over the case to the Press Council," Leo said.
Leo also asked the Police to probe the institution or the individual who leak the information, instead of investigating Tempo Editor in Chief.
