TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An NGO for sea turtle conservation Jarum Pentul continues their dedication to protect marine ecosystem especially the endangered sea turtle in southern coast of Java. Illegal fishing on sea turtles in this region is still become a problem.
“We campaign and give understanding to fisherman in the southern coast of Yogyakarta to stop fishing and consuming the turtles,” said Chairman of Jarum Pentul Volunteer, Ferry Munandar on Sunday.
According to Ferry, there is bigger potential of turtle fishing in beaches in Gunung Kidul area where most turtles search for food.
“There are two turtle’s habitation, one for laying eggs and one for eating. Bantul is a place for the turtles to lay their egg while Gunung Kidul is a place for the turtles to find food because there are many seaweed and small jelly fish,” Ferry added.
Ferry said he is planning to initiate a community to protect turtles in Gunung Kidul and Kulon Progo.
“Among three regencies with beaches in Yogyakarta, only that region does not have community.”
