TEMPO.CO , Jakarta – Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly said there were around 240 Indonesian nationals who were facing death penalty overseas.
He said most of them were in the Middle East and the government would look into the law in each country.
“In the Middle East, death penalty can be replaced by paying diyat (blood money),” said Yasonna on Tuesday. “We will try to free them.”
Yasonna, however, dismissed the possibility of swapping death-row inmates between countries. “It’s not like that, but every country must protect its citizens,” he said.
Nusron Wahid, the head of the Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI), confirmed that there were more than 200 Indonesian workers that would be executed.
