TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - Maritime Affairs Ministry opens a transitional period for trawls and seine nets regulation. Previously, the Minister issued a regulation banning the use of trawl and seine net that will start on January 9, 2015. "The transition period will last until September this year," said KKP Secretary General Sjarief Widjaja.
The transition period is expected to calm the waves of protest from fishermen, claiming that the regulation cost them fortune. The fishermen said that the new environmental-friendly gear will cost them a lot and that it will take time for them to re-adjust.
During the transitional period, government is set to define the ban and socialize the regulation. "Eight months are enough for them to save and prepare," said Sjarief.
