TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Political Communication analyst at the Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah Gun Gun Heryanto viewed that the meeting between President Joko Widodo and Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) party chairman Prabowo Subianto posed a threat against the pro-government coalition.
“Imagine if there was a new affiliation. It would pose a threat against certain positions and resources,” said Gun Gun.
The meeting was reportedly held to discuss the conflict between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police. The conflict was triggered by KPK’s decision to name Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as a suspect in a graft case.
After meeting Jokowi at Bogor State Palace, Prabowo pleged his support for Jokowi’s stance. According to Prabowo, he would support Jokowi only for the sake of the people.
On the other hand, the pro government’s Great Indonesia Coalition urged Jokowi to inaugurate Budi Gunawan despite protests from anti-graft activists.
The meeting sparks reaction from pro government party leaders, particularly when Prabowo gathered the Red-and-White Coalition leaders, and Jokowi requested the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) to screen new candidates.
Pro government party leaders then held a meeting at Megawati Soekarnopurtri’s residence to respond the meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo.
