TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sony Corp announced sales of its PlayStation 4 video game consoles to exceed 18.5 million units on January 4, 2015, up from 13.5 million at the end of October 2014, Antara News reported.

Showing strong holiday demand and a bright spot for a company recovering from a massive cyber-attack.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said last month that holiday sales in Europe were so strong that it struggled to keep up with the demands.

The sales figures has also relief Sony as it wrestles with weak sales of smartphones and TVs making the company heading towards a loss.

The console started its sale at the end of 2013 in the United States, Western Europe and Latin America, nearly the same time that rival Microsoft Corp's Xbox One was released.

Microsoft has offered massive discounts in the U.S. market for the XBox One in November.
