TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly is preparing a higher education program at penitentiaries to provide young potential convicts an opportunity to have a better future.
“We’re providing [convicts with education] opportunities because based on the Law on Correctional, convicts have the right to access education and to be employed,” Yasonna said on Friday, November 5, 2014.
Yasonna revealed his ministry would team with several universities, such as Tarumanegara University, the Christian University of Indonesia, and Trisakti University, to supply correctional institutions with teaching staff.
“[The program] will start in February 2015,” Yasonna said.
The Justice Ministry has prepared correctional centers in Salemba, Cipinang and Pondok Bambu as the pilot projects for the program. The program, Yasonna explained, would be financed by CSR funds from state-owned enterprises.
“I have asked State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Sumarno to raise the funds for the program,” he added.
