TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has reported the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) to the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) for allegedly violating the law on racial and ethnic discrimination when protesting against the ascension of Acting Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama as the capital's governor.
According to Kontras coordinator Haris Azahar, the report was filed two weeks ago. “There is no response yet,” he said in Surabaya on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Ahok sent a letter to the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, recommending that the FPI be disbanded. Ahok said FPI had been frequently anarchic in their actions, spreading hatred, and disrupting the inauguration of Jakarta governor.
Meanwhile, FPI chairman Rizieq Shihab said Ahok was unworthy of spearheading Jakarta as he was a Christian and not a Jakartan.
Haris called on related institutions, such as the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, the National Police and Komnas HAM to take actions and ban all FPI’s activities that have the potential to trigger violence.
