TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Australia's cattle producers will face increased competition to enter Indonesia, which is Australia's largest live-export market. Bustanul Arifin, professor of agricultural economics at the University of Lampung, says President Joko Widodo is trying to reduce the import of Australian cattle.

"The new government will continue to reduce its reliance on Australian cattle," he spoke at the Australia Food Futures Conference in Darwin, yesterday, as reported by Sky News Australia.

According to Bustanul, Australian entrepreneurs and cattle breeders will have to compete with Brazil, India, and Malaysia. To do so, Australian beef producers must work with small local farmers, offering them technical assistance as part of the trade partnership.

Indonesia is Australia's largest live cattle export destination. Last year, the Indonesian market accounted for 55 percent of Australia's total exports at 624,749 heads worth US$461 million.
