TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned railway firm PT KAI director Ignatius Jonan is reportedly to be a strong transportation minister candidate. The Indonesian Consumer Foundation (YLKI) chairman Sudaryatmo said if Jonan was to be appointed as the transportation minster, he would need to have a different method to lead the ministry from how he lead PT KAI.

According to Sudaryatmo, Jonan could not haphazardly sack his staff like he previously did.

"Jonan's success is not only because of himself, but also because of how he utilizes the bureaucracy," Sudaryatmo said.

The transportation minister's tasks are not limited to railway matters, but they also cover sea and air transportation issues. Sea transportation, he said, could pose bigger challenges than those related to railway transportation because they might involve other ministries and institutions.

"It would take tactics, regulations and strategies. The transportation ministry is far more complex than state-owned enterprises," Sudaryatmo said.

Jonan was said to be included in President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's shortlist as a minister candidate since Jonan was considered successful in improving PT KAI's performance.
