TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Kupang Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), predicted that the El Nino is currently impacting several regions in Indonesia and will continue to happen until December 2014.
“At least in the next three months since August, El Nino phenomenon causes the drought in several regions and affects crops in wet and dry farms,” said Jui Setiayanto , the Climatology Head of BMKG Lasiana Station in Kupang, on Saturday.
However, Jui said that the El Nino impacts on agriculture is currently insignificant and can be suppressed.
“Our prediction (BMKG) is that El Nino is weak this time, so it will not affect the agriculture sector,” Jui added.
Still according to Jui, El Nino may affect the crops both directly and indirectly. The examples of direct effects include the drought and rising of temperature. The pests and plantations diseases are the examples of how El Nino affects crops indirectly.
