TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration is planning to build a new airport in North Jakarta and name it after the late governor Ali Sadikin, as reported by Antara News.

According to Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, the airport will be able to ease the traffic congestion at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang.

“We will name the airport after the late governor because he, as governor, played a very important role in developing the city. Therefore, we must honor his meritorious services,” Ahok said at City Hall in Central Jakarta on Friday.

He added that the airport would be located near the planned National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) in North Jakarta.

He said that the city administration had not discussed when the airport’s construction would begin. However, he said that the construction had to be completed three years after groundbreaking.

North Jakarta is home to the country’s main seaport, Tanjung Priok. Currently, the area is being developed in order to facilitate companies importing and exporting goods to and from the city.
