BPS: 66 Cities Post Inflation in August

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A survey by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that inflation in August 2014 stood at 0.47 percent. "Of 82 cities surveyed, 66 cities posted inflation, while 16 experienced deflation," BPS chief Suryamin said on Monday, September 1.


Suryamin said the city of Tanjung Pandan posted the highest inflation of 1.98 percent, with a consumer price index (CPI) of 121.24. The lowest inflation was posted by Banjarmasin with 0.02 and a CPI level of 111.63.


The highest deflation was in Ternate (1.02 percent). The city also has posted the lowest CPI of 116. Meanwhile, Samarinda noted the lowest deflation rate nationwide with 0.01 percent over a CPI score of 115.17.


"Referring to these conditions, there appears to be an attempt to control inflation," Suryamin said.


Java was the island with the most cities that posted inflation. Of 26 cities surveyed, 24 experienced inflation. The highest inflation happened in Serang with a rate of 1.16 percent and a CPI level of 116.50. Kediri posted the lowest inflation rate of 0.06 percent and a CPI of inflation 113.40.
