TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Microsoft is to shut down messaging software MSN Messenger, known also as Windows Live Messenger, in October 31. The shutdown will also apply in China, where there are 300 million MSN users.
Microsoft has informed the shutdown since Thursday, last week, sending notification email to its Chinese users. MSN users are asked to divert their account to Skype, in which Microsoft bought back in 2012 for US$8.5 billion.
MSN was first launched in 1999 as a contender for other messaging software such as Instant Messenger and ICQ. MSN has had its heyday, topping the popularity chart by presenting emoticon, video call, and games feature. However, the rise of Skype, particularly after Microsoft acquisition, has become a new emerging trend for messaging software.
