TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muslims who are on the travel can now find halal foods easier by using the Android-based app HalalMinds. The app that was first launched in Japan helps to identify and search for halal products.

The initiator of HalalMinds, Agung Pambudi said that the app is useful for muslims who are traveling outside their countries.

“Especially in Japan where they cannot understand kanji letters on the product label,” Pambudi said in his email to Tempo on Friday.

Users only have to scan the barcode of the product with their smartphones when they are shopping. The app will then match the barcode with its database of 500,000 products.

Despite of its simple design and newly-launched, Agung claimed that the app has been useful for Muslims domiciled in Japan. The app has been downloaded over 1,100 times.

The app has even won an international entrepreneur competition Global Tic. Although HalalMind represented Japan in the competition, it is developed by Indonesian living in Japan. This year, Indonesia sends two representing apps in the competition namely Hercula and The Fengshui.
