TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Bank disbursed US$490,000 (Rp5.71 billion) to the Indonesian government to develop of a fuel-efficient, healthy stove project.

Rida Mulyana, director general of renewable energy and energy conversion at the Energy Ministry, said the fund is part of the World Bank's Clean Stove Initiative (CSI) program aimed at suppressing premature deaths from respiratory diseases. These respiratory diseases are caused by, among others, the use of traditional stoves fired by wood.

Rida said the disbursement was split into two. As many as US$190,000 was allotted as a subsidy through PT BRI (Persero), while the remaining US$300,000 will be spent by the government.

The government will use the fund to facilitate related institutions, such as constructing a stove-testing laboratory. Meanwhile, BRI will use the fund it gets to finance the cost of producing healthy, clean, fuel-efficient stoves worth Rp300,000 per unit.

According to Rida, the CSI program will begin with pilot projects in Central Java and Yogyakarta. The program is targeting some 20,000 Indonesian households.
