Govt' Prepares to Counter Newmont's Lawsuit

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister foe Economic Affairs Chairul Tanjung, said that the government will respond seriously to Newmont Nusa Tenggara's lawsuit to the International Center for Settlement of Investment Dispute (ICSID). "The president will sign a decree to form a team that will respond to Newmont's lawsuit," he said on Monday, July 21, 2014.

The team members will consists officials from the Justice and Human Rights Ministry, the Finance Ministry, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, the BKPM (Investment Coordinating Board), and the Attorney General Office. "This team will appoint an attorney that represents the government in facing Newmont's lawsuit," he said. Meanwhile, CT has been appointed as the team coordinator.


The government also planned to file a counter-claim against Newmont to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). "We are opening possibilities to counter-claim Newmont to the UNCITRAL," he said.


However, renegotiation with Newmont will continue to be carried out to seek alternative solutions.
