SBY to Decide Freeport's and Newmont's Fate

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for the Economy Chairul Tanjung, said that the government is yet to take actions on two troubled mining companies, Newmont and Freeport. The government will summon both companies next week to clarify their situation.
"I will invite related ministers to ask questions and their commitments. I will have a meeting will all ministers regarding this situation. The results will be submitted to the president. Since this is a strategic decision, the president will make the decision," Chairul said after a meeting on Wednesday, May 21, 2014.
Earlier, Newmont Nusa Tenggara announced that it will reduce its production activities in June 2014. The decision will cause a number of its employees to lose their jobs.
Currently, Newmont employs 4,000 people and 4,000 contractors. According to Newmont management, they were forced to make the decision to save cost and to maintain the company's operational activities.
