Millions in West Java Abstain in Parliamentary Elections

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The General Election Commission (KPU) of West Java has completed the vote count of the legislative election on Thursday, April 2014.
Chairman of West Java KPU Yayat Hidayat said after a vote recapitulation plenary meeting in Bandung on Thursday that the total number of registered voters in West Java was 33,344,717.
Yayat said the number of voters appearing at polling stations reached 23,776,356, implying that the people’s participation in West Java in the parliamentary elections stood at 71.3 percent. He said the figure was lower than the elections in 2009 and that the KPU had missed its target of 76 percent. Yayat added there were 9,568,358 registered voters who were abstain in the elections.
On the third day, the ballot counting plenary meeting agenda is to discuss objections raised by political parties and legislative candidates related to the vote tally. A number of objections were voiced by political parties and witnesses of legislative candidates regarding the revision of the vote tally at the regency level.
