TEMPO.CO, Black Sea - A Russian fighter jet was reported of making multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes amid escalating tensions in the region.
"This provocative and unprofessional Russian action is inconsistent with international protocols and previous agreements on the professional interaction between our military," said Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman.
The Russian Fencer jet made 12 passes and flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook Navy destroyer on Saturday. The US warship issued several radio queries and warnings using international emergency circuits, in which the Russian jet did not respond.
The stakeout ended with no incident and contact, as the jet then evaded and lost contact. Previous case also reported a Russian Navy frigate had been shadowing US warship, remaining within visual distance but not close enough to be unsafe.
