TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) reported that 238 companies have allegedly offered investment frauds since early 2014. OJK chief Muliaman D. Hadad said that the people have reported hundreds of company names for alleged scams.
The companies offer high-yielding investment products to consumers using a multi-level marketing (MLM) scheme.
"They offer products such as gold and futures trading," Hadad told Antara last weekend.
The companies are also using public figures and religious leaders to attract potential customers and "endorse the products as if they are [legal]," Hadad said.
Hadad said that the OJK's Investment Alert Team—consisted of a number of state institutions—is currently investigating the suspected firms.
