TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sukapura Batik from Tasikmalaya, West Java, is starting to fade as batik crafters running low on capital and no regeneration attempt has been made.

Out of 50 Sukapura Batik crafters, only 13 continues to preserve the art, all in home industry scale. Uun Kurniasih, one of the crafters, mentioned that youths are no longer interested in keeping the legacy alive.

Nana Heryana, the Head of Tourism and Culture Department of Tasikmalaya, said that creative design is also the main factor that threatens Sukapura Batik, with so many crafters holding onto tradition and refusing to make new innovations.

Moreover, Lina Ruzhanul Ulum, the Head of Regional National Crafts Board suggested that crafters must be willing to meet current market demands. She also said that Batik should be included as a subject in school.
