TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro stated that the development of primary defense system (alutsista) is not only for exhibitional purpose. Alutsista development, according to Purnomo, is important for national pride.

"A strong country is a country with a strong defense [system]," he said on Friday, November 29.

Purnomo said since 2010, the Defense Ministry has cooperated with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, National Intelligence Agency, and oter related ministries to make a list of primary threats that can be used as a basis for developing the country's defense system.

He later added that political conditions can also be considered as a threat to alutsista development.

"If the President does not understand about military, defense system development could come to a halt," he said.

In an effort to support defense system development, the Minister made two recommendations: the establishment of a legal framework on defense system by executive bodies, and a clear political support from the House of Representatives.
