TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - DKI Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that a river patrol, in cooperation with Indonesian Land Armed Forces (TNI AD), will be started this week.

"There will be patrol boats carrying army personnel, public order officers, and fire brigades patrolling the rivers," said Jokowi in the Town Hall, on September 8, adding that this is for a control measure so that people will not throw their trash in the rivers.

According to Jokowi, at least 2,000 tons from the total 6,000 tons of litters that produced by Jakarta residents were thrown into the river. This becomes one of the many reasons why flood keeps on sweeping Jakarta. He also explained that the river patrol is a part of the normalization project of Ciliwung River.

The Head of Sanitation Department, Unu Nurdin, said that the patrols will make people wary to throw their garbage into the river. "This is because, people who caught red handed throwing trash into the river will be charged with light criminal punishment," said Unu.
